Focus: Managed Email Security Services

What are "managed email security services"?

Managed email security services are provided by special outsourcing providers. All in- and outbound email is diverted through this provider`s server, where antivirus and anti-spam services are performed. Internal email communications are not covered by this service.

How does mail redirection work?

To redirect the mail, the mail server entry in the global Domain Name System (DNS) is changed, the provider, in effect, acting as a substitute mail system. All emails addressed to or sent out from your company must then be buffered by that service provider.

Can these services cover individual requirements?

To keep costs down and for reasons of scale (i.e. to service a large number of customers), providers usually offer only general mail services, such as virus protection and spam filtering. They can not tailor their services to the needs of individual customers, for example with special group or user policies. The architecture of managed email security services has inherent flaws, being unable, for example, to scan internal emails for viruses.
False positives present a particular problem of provider-side spam filtering, since they never reach their intended recipient, remaining instead in the provider`s quarantine. To minimize the false positives rate, providers usually choose "soft" spam filter functions, resulting in a much higher spam rate.
These drawbacks do not exist with your own, corporate, solution, such as iQ.Suite offers. With your own company-specific policies, this software provides optimum protection and flexibility.
